About Us
Capt Mindy Michtner bought her first sailboat in 1996 at the age of 26 while living outside of Manhattan, working as a professional dancer. By 2003, she hung up her dancing shoes to adapt a barefoot approach to life. In 2000 set off on a 5 year sailing sabbatical. Sailing all over the Caribbean and landing on the most spectacular island of St John. And in 2004 acquired her 50 ton Master’s Captain’s license from the US Coast Guard.
After working as a charter captain on both power and sailing vessels for the next 6 years, Mindy decided to start her own charter company. In 2010 she created St John’s Big Blue Excursions Charter company.
Captain Mindy is honored to be the first female owner/ operator of a charter fleet, both power and sail, in the Virgin Islands. Her favorite part was hosting families for their best vacation day and sharing their special moments!
While still a big fan of Big Blue excursions, she decided to step down in 2017 as with growing popularity and long charter days it became a bigger venture than anticipated. Hence the begining of St John Dinghy Rentals!…
